Thomas Luciano Memorial Scholarship Fund

Program Guidelines and Requirements:

The Puerto Rican Cultural Society of Charlotte (PRCSC) is committed to supporting the educational advancement of Puerto Rican youth.  The purpose of the Thomas Luciano Scholarship Fund is to provide scholarships to deserving, qualified high school graduating seniors intending to pursue a course of study at either a two-year or four-year higher educational institution.

For 2018, the Thomas Luciano Scholarship Fund will award two (2) scholarships in the amount of $1,000.00 per award.  Scholarship funds will be awarded to the student upon evidence of registration in an accredited higher educational institution.

Criteria and eligibility (TLSF applicants):

  • Applicant must be of Puerto Rican descent – first or second generation.
  • Applicant must be a resident of Mecklenburg, Concord, Cabarrus, Gaston, South Iredell/Mooresville or Union Counties in the State of North Carolina.
  • Applicant must be a graduating high school senior in the year of the award.
  • Applicant must have a 3.0 grade point average (B average or higher).
  • Applicant must demonstrate active community involvement.
  • Applicant must submit an essay with PRCSC specific topic.
  • Applicants may not be related to any Board of Directors or Staff.

Deadline for scholarship applications is May 31, 2018, 5:00 p.m.

Incomplete, illegible or late applications will not be considered.

You will be notified by mail by July 15th regarding the status of your application.

Application Process:

Completely fill out the two-page application form (leave nothing blank).

Include a one page bio with a brief description of yourself, your college plans, intended major, community service and career goals.

Two (2) letters of recommendation from choice of high school teachers, administrators, counselors, employers, or individuals with significant personal knowledge of applicant.

An official and most recent high school transcript with cumulative grade point average and class standing/rank.

Essay – Essay must be at least 2 pages (typed, double spaced, 12pt).

In Loving Memory

Thomas J. Luciano was 16 years old, a Junior at South Mecklenburg HS, an active member of the NJROTC program. He was Cadet Chief Petty Officer and the unit’s Public Affairs Officer. Thomas was selected to serve the next year as the Command Senior Chief as the individual most responsible for the development and welfare of junior cadets. He was promoted posthumously. He was also an active member of Health Occupations Students of America. He attended World Worship Church. Thomas enjoyed music, dancing and hanging out with his friends. Thomas was full of life and had a smile that would warm any ones heart. Together with his mom, he participated in numerous charitable events. He was proud of his Puerto Rican heritage and proudly displayed his flag at cultural events. He was the loving son of our friend Olga Rivera.
